FBI Ransomware Warning: What Every Business Needs to Know

FBI Issues New Ransomware Warning for Businesses

When was the last time you stopped to think, “What would happen if all our business files were suddenly locked away?”

That’s exactly the scenario the FBI ransomware warning is about right now.

The agency has raised the alarm over a new and aggressive ransomware group called Interlock — and they’re already targeting businesses across North America and Europe.

Who Is Interlock and How Do They Attack?

Interlock appeared in late 2024, but they’ve quickly made a name for themselves.

Their method is straightforward but devastating:

  1. Break into your systems.

  2. Quietly steal sensitive data.

  3. Encrypt everything so you can’t access it.

  4. Demand a ransom — usually with just a few days to pay before your files are leaked publicly.

This “double extortion” method has become common, but Interlock stands out for its speed and aggression.

They get in using fake browser or security updates, booby-trapped websites, and phishing scams that trick users into clicking. Once inside, they deploy tools to spy, steal passwords, and lock down files.

Even worse — they can attack both Windows and Linux systems, which means almost any business could be at risk.

Why Small and Mid-Sized Businesses Are Prime Targets

It’s easy to assume ransomware is something that only happens to large corporations, but that’s not the case.

Cybercriminals know that smaller businesses often have tighter budgets and fewer cybersecurity defenses. To them, that makes SMBs easier, faster, and more profitable targets.

Imagine losing access to your client data, financial records, or systems that keep your business running. Even if you recover, the downtime and reputational damage can be massive.

How to Protect Your Business Right Now

The FBI’s guidance is clear — prevention is key:

  • Update everything: Keep your systems and software patched.

  • Use multi-factor authentication (MFA): It’s one of the easiest and most effective defenses.

  • Set up web filtering and firewalls: Stop malicious links before they reach your network.

  • Segment your systems: If one area is infected, it won’t take down the entire company.

  • Invest in advanced security tools: Detect and stop suspicious behavior before it spreads.

It may sound technical, but taking action now is far cheaper (and less stressful) than recovering after an attack.

The FBI ransomware warning isn’t something to ignore — Interlock isn’t going away anytime soon. Now’s the time to make sure your business isn’t next on their list.
