Ask Copilot in Windows 11: A Smarter Taskbar Search (If You Want It)

Have you ever wished your computer actually understood what you were trying to do?
Instead of clicking through menus, opening settings, or Googling basic tasks, you just want your computer to help.
Microsoft is working on exactly that.
In the latest Windows 11 preview builds, Microsoft is testing a new feature called Ask Copilot. It places Copilot right into the taskbar search box, turning basic search into something much smarter.
Traditionally, the Windows taskbar search only looks for files, apps, or settings. You type a keyword and hope you remember the right name.
With Ask Copilot, that same search box gets an AI upgrade.
Instead of just searching, it understands what you’re trying to accomplish and helps you do it.
For example, you could type:
“Open the invoice template I used last month”
“Connect to the projector”
“How do I split this PDF?”
Instead of showing a list of results, Copilot can take action. It can open files, change settings, or give you a clear answer right away.
That means less clicking, less guessing, and less wasted time.
You’ll also see new icons next to the Ask Copilot box. These give quick access to Copilot Vision, which understands what’s on your screen, and voice commands, so you can talk instead of type.
Ask Copilot Windows 11 Is Optional
If this sounds like too much AI for your taste, don’t worry.
Ask Copilot Windows 11 is completely opt-in.
You’ll only see it if you turn it on by going to: Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Ask Copilot
If you don’t enable it, Windows search stays exactly the same as it is today.
Microsoft has also been clear about privacy. Ask Copilot does not receive any additional access to your data. It uses the same permissions as regular Windows search. It is not scanning private files or reading content without permission.
What This Means for Your Business
The biggest benefit is simple: time and focus.
Your team spends less time hunting for files, changing settings, or asking IT to help with simple tasks. Instead, they get answers and actions instantly.
That means fewer interruptions, better productivity, and a smoother workday.
Ask Copilot is still in testing, but a wider rollout is likely coming soon. When it does, businesses will have to option to adopt it or stick with classic search.
Either way, the control stays with you.
