Trying to protect your business with antivirus software should be safe, right? Not always.
If you’re not careful, that “antivirus” could actually be the threat.
Cybercriminals are getting better at making fake websites that look almost exactly like the real thing. One recent case involved a perfect copy of a well-known cybersecurity company’s site.
The fake page had the same design and even a big “Download” button in the right spot. But instead of antivirus software, clicking it installed malware—a dangerous program pretending to be helpful.
The file (StoreInstaller.exe) secretly installed something called VenomRAT. This is a Remote Access Trojan (RAT), which gives hackers full control of your computer.
It can:
Steal passwords and logins
Record everything you type
Spy through your webcam
Open the door for even more attacks
These criminals weren’t just spying—they were stealing. Researchers found they were after cryptocurrency wallets and login details to sell or use for theft.
And it’s not just antivirus software they fake. Hackers also copy bank websites and IT service pages to trick people. Some fake sites are even hosted on trusted platforms like Amazon, which makes them look real at first glance.
If your business falls for one of these scams, the damage can be serious:
Lost company data
Exposed customer information
Financial loss
A damaged reputation
How to Stay Safe
Check website addresses carefully. A small typo can mean it’s fake.
Don’t click links in emails or texts unless you’re sure they’re genuine.
Download software only from official websites.
Ask your IT partner (like us) if you’re not sure.
Remember: cybercriminals count on people being busy, distracted, or just trying to do the right thing. A few seconds of caution now could save you from a huge problem later.
If you’re ever unsure, reach out—we’ll help keep you safe.
