New Formatting Tools Coming to Notepad

Updated: Oct 6, 2025

When’s the last time you opened Notepad and thought, “I wish I could make this bold or add a heading”?

Probably never.

But Microsoft is giving Notepad a small upgrade that might actually be pretty useful. Especially if you use it for quick notes, meeting minutes, or simple checklists.

Notepad has always been super basic. It opens fast, saves fast, and doesn’t get in your way. That’s why so many people love it.

Now, Microsoft is testing new formatting options like bold and italic text, headings, hyperlinks, and even bullet points.

The goal isn’t to turn Notepad into Word—it’s just to make notes easier to read and organize.

The formatting uses something called markdown. That’s a simple system where you type symbols to add style. For example, putting two asterisks around a word makes it bold.

It’s clean, lightweight, and you can turn it off completely if you don’t want it.

Some people worry updates like this make apps slower or bloated. But in this case, the changes are small and optional. It’s more like getting a nicer pen, not switching to a whole printing press.

And since WordPad has been retired, this gives users something in between plain text and a full word processor.

For small businesses especially, this could be handy. More structure in notes means less confusion and clearer communication.

It’s not flashy, but it’s practical.

This update is another example of Microsoft improving Windows 11 tools while keeping them simple. So next time you’re making a to-do list, maybe try out those bold headings.
