Sync Passkeys Across Your Devices: A Big Win for Security and Convenience

Be honest. When was the last time you forgot a password and got stuck in a loop of “reset your password” emails?
It happens to everyone. And it’s one of the most annoying parts of modern work.
The good news? Microsoft may have finally fixed it.
Microsoft has announced you can now sync passkeys across your devices using your Microsoft Account in Edge. This is a big step forward for both security and ease of use.
So, what exactly is a passkey?
Passkeys are a password-free way to sign in to apps and websites. Instead of typing long, complicated passwords, you use built-in security on your device. That could be Face ID, fingerprint scanning, or a PIN.
This makes signing in faster and much safer.
Passkeys are built on something called the FIDO2 standard. This ties your login information directly to your device. That means there’s no password for hackers to steal and no fake login pages to trick you with.
Why This Update Matters
Until now, passkeys had one major downside.
They were usually saved only on one device.
If your laptop broke, was replaced, or wasn’t backed up properly, you could lose access to your accounts. For businesses, that could mean downtime, support calls, and frustration.
Not ideal.
Now, Microsoft has fixed that problem.
With the latest Edge update, your passkeys can be securely stored and synced in the cloud. They’re protected by your Microsoft Account and an extra PIN using Microsoft Password Manager.
That means you can sign in to a new Windows 11 PC and your passkeys come with you. No lockouts. No panic. No password resets.
Are Synced Passkeys Safe?
This is the question we hear most.
Yes, they are.
Microsoft has confirmed that synced passkeys are encrypted in the cloud and protected by multiple layers of security. In fact, syncing passkeys across your devices is just as secure as storing them locally — but far more convenient.
Why Businesses Should Care
Fewer passwords mean:
Fewer password resets
Fewer helpdesk tickets
Less risk of phishing attacks
Less password reuse
And for employees, it’s one less thing to remember during a busy workday.
Sync Passkeys Across Your Devices and Move Forward
This update may feel small, but it’s an important step toward better productivity and stronger security.
Passkeys are already rolling out on Windows 11, with Mac and mobile support coming soon. When Edge asks if you want to save a passkey, it’s a smart move to say yes.
If you’re not sure how this fits into your business security strategy, that’s where we can help.
